Fabrizio Arossa has built his career across some of the world’s leading legal and financial centres — Turin, Milan, Rome, Paris, Brussels and San Francisco — developing a perspective on business law that cuts across legal systems, cultures and jurisdictions.

In 1997, he was one of the founding partners of Freshfields in Italy, playing a central role in establishing the firm and positioning it over the following thirty years as a benchmark for major transactions in the country. Within the firm he also held global governance roles, including membership of the Partnership Council and the Partner Recommendation Committee.

Fabrizio Arossa combines his professional practice with a consistent academic and publishing engagement across his areas of expertise.

He has taught International Trade Law at the University of Trento, at the United Nations Campus in Turin and other international institutions, and teaches at Luiss University within the global law program. He regularly delivers other lectures and conference presentations on international arbitration, post-M&A disputes, corporate governance and class actions

He is the author of the Italian chapter of Corporate Internal Investigations, published by Oxford University Press, and other publications

He serves on the Board of the Italian Arbitration Association (AIA), where he co-chairs the focus group on Post-M&A Arbitration.

RECENT EXPERIENCES

As illustrative examples of his recent professional experience, among the most significant cases, he has assisted:

  • an international operator of renewable energies plants in two parallel arbitrations against the Italian general contractor arising from breaches and delays in the performance of Engineering, Procurement & Construction agreements relating to two important solar parks;
  • an oil & gas multinational before the Court of Justice of the European Union for the annulment for contrast with EU law of a regulation imposing a so-called solidarity contribution on the so-called excess profits of energy companies;
  • a private equity fund in the management of risks, also dispute-related, associated with an acquisition that did not close;
  • a multinational paper producer in multiple follow-on proceedings for alleged damages caused by anticompetitive agreements;
  • an international chemicals group on the various phases of a post-M&A arbitration and its defense against a request for revision of the award;
  • an oil & gas multinational in a complex group of proceedings against the party jointly liable for a serious environmental incident, with oil discharge at sea;
  • a telecommunications infrastructure operator in a damage suit against the incumbent for abuse of dominant position;
  • an automotive international group on the damage suits following the fine imposed by the European Commission;
  • a multinational leader in the technology sector on class actions and other lawsuits from consumers and their associations and on regulatory investigations;
  • an automotive multinational in various proceedings stemming from alleged emission cheating and misrepresentations;
  • a primary tlc operator on arbitration and other proceedings, including in relation to shareholder agreements;
  • a cement producer in follow-on proceedings for alleged damages caused by anticompetitive agreements;
  • an international railway operator in proceedings, also before the Court of Justice of the EU, relating to state aid for the benefit of the incumbent
